       Genes determine pigment

       Pigment determines coat color, and it is genes that determine pigment. There are two genes controlling melanin production: B gene and O gene. B gene tube is the amount of true melanin production, which determines the depth of cat fur color. O gene can change the metabolic pathway of true melanin to produce brown melanin, which makes the cat yellow. The o gene is on the cat’s sex chromosome X, which is why hawksbill cats must be females.

       The origin of white hair on cats is more complicated. Albino gene is one of the reasons why cats grow white hair. It can affect the enzyme responsible for melanin processing, and its effect is also related to body temperature. In places with lower body temperature, such as the face, ears, tail and limbs, the color of hair will be darker. For example, the color of Siamese cats is produced in this way.

       Another gene related to coat color is the W gene, which can significantly reduce the number of melanocytes in the skin by affecting stem cell migration. So when deciding the coat color, it has the final say, or if it is expressed, the cat must be white.

       Unfortunately, because the stem cells affected by the w gene are also involved in the development of the inner ear and cochlea, many white cats are somewhat deaf. In addition, because the w gene is also involved in the production of pigment in the iris, white cats usually have blue eyes. We often say that the cat’s Yin and Yang eyes are still related to the w gene.
